Google launches New Domain Registration Services- a big challenge for Go Daddy
In a move that is likely to give Go Daddy and other domain registering sites, a run for their money, Google has announced that it has launched Google Domains, a domain registering service. Currently under Invite Only beta, it will offer standard domains like.com for $ 12 a year.
As per a Google official spokesperson, pricing for other new domains like. Guruetcis yet to be determined. Google, however, is yet to make public a full list of its new domain names.
The entry into the field of domain registration is being positioned as Google as an effort to give a fillip to small businesses. As a part of this effort Google had launched My Business, some time back.
Google has teamed up with four partners with website building expertise – Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, and Shopify. However Google will not be hosting the websites only registering the domain names.
While Google’s domain registration rates are comparable to that of other players, what will give Google a big advantage, other than its brand name are features like private registration & emails that are in-built into Google’s packages, and which come at a cost on other sites.
This is likely to bring a complete shake up in the domain registration space especially in a growing market like India. While so far companies like Go Daddy were partners with Google, this move brings them into direct competing space. If Go Daddy has indeed begun some work on shedding its sleazy image, it sure has to speed it up.
